| MBI TIPS Brought to you by the unparalleled: MBI Ô05
You think you all know what to bring and what not to bringÉ but you donÕt!!! you think you should just read that list they gave you and then youÕre done, right? WRONG!!!!!!! So listen up and donÕt pout! this is fact, straight from the mouths of veterans from MBI Ô05. Now perk up and pay attention! This is valuable advice. : BEFORE MBI, a.k.a. WHAT TO PACK 1. Make your luggage very recognizable. Paint it, or buy it in bright colors. Not a Òcolorful strapÓ something either. You WILL lose it. 2. The smaller your sleeping bag the better. You only end up using it three or four times, and if it fits nicely in a nook of your suitcase, then it will all work out. You will probably lose it if you have to carry it separately. I know I did. 3. You should not have to stuff everything into your bag to the point where it takes an hour to zipper. You will regret over-packing. On the other hand, make sure you have enough of the basics. 4. Converse high tops, Pumas, Vans, and bowling shoes do not count as good hiking shoes. But they make for great blisters and shin splints, so if thatÕs your scene, go right ahead. ThereÕs a brand called Colombia that makes really great sneaker/hiking shoes. 5. You can bring one or two tank tops for night time & shabbat, but otherwise, bring just T-shirts, because you cannot cannot cannot wear them during the rest of the day & they just take up space. 6. Bring lots of sunscreen, (but no complicated bottles) something simple like NO-AD, because you must must must wear it. Also, bring at least 1 hat that you plan on wearing EVERY DAY, because it is also very important for good health. 7. Camel back water contraptions are not nerdy, theyÕre very convenient. You should know right now that you are required to carry with you 3 LITERS OF WATER for every hike. ThatÕs about the size of 3 Nalgenes. So if you have a camel back & a Nalgene, youÕre set! They supply 2 liter & a half bottles to everyone, paid by kupa. (so kupa is pretty important. Make sure you pay!) 8. International debit cards (from your local AAA) are very much suggested. We suggest about $300, but you wonÕt use it all. DO NOT USE TRAVELLERS CHECKS. TheyÕre way too complicated to deal with. 9. Pack twice as much underwear as they tell you. About 20 pairs. You will want and need it. 10. Pack an extra outfit including shirt, shorts & underwear in your carry-on bag for the plane. In Õ05 they lost some peoples luggage and they had to wear the same clothes for almost a week. 11. Bring lots of your individual campÕs merchandise for trading on Yom Habonim Dror. I mean how cool would it be to take home a shirt from Habo Argentina? 12. We suggest you bring tissues, hand sanitizer and a small, discreet container containing Tylenol. These are good for when you just come on the bus after a hike or when you arenÕt feeling your best. 13. Its ok to bring ipods and digital cameras. As long as you pay attention to it, you wonÕt lose it. Just make sure you take it out of your bag before you jump in a lake with your backpack. 14. Squoosh pillows are perfect for the bus. We very much suggest them. Any small pillow you can use for sleeping is very convenient 15. A small bottle of clothing detergent is very nice for when you really need underwear and they havenÕt done laundry or you missed it for one reason or another.
DURING MBI a.k.a. DO THESE THINGS 1. Take lots of pictures 2. Take advantage of ATMs when you see them, because you donÕt see them too often. 3. Have shwarma and/or falafel while youÕre there Ð itÕs a crime not to. 4. Sunscreen and hydration are very important. Try your best not to get dehydrated cause it SUCKS. Drink lots and donÕt get sunburnt cause that hurts a lot too. 5. Eat at least a bite of everything put before you. Even if it looks weird (like this neon orange Arab dessert we had once) it probably tastes amazing. 6. Try not to fall asleep on Massada until after the sun comes up. 7. SHOWER. Often. No one likes a smelly kid. And you will definitely be smelly. 8. If you happen to get sick, even if its something slightly embarrassing such as a digestive problem, deal with it immediately. It is not good to be sick on MBI.
